Which of these is your store?
Six symptoms, and what is usually behind each one. Recognising yours here is worth more than a call. It tells you what to ask any agency you talk to.
Checkout is slow on mobile
Every 100ms of added latency costs roughly 1% of conversions. On Woo it is usually a cart-fragments AJAX call firing on every page, or a shipping calculator hitting a live API before the customer has asked.
Orders and payouts do not reconcile
Almost always webhooks: a failed payment_intent.succeeded that nothing retried, so the gateway took money the store never recorded. It compounds silently until an accountant finds it.
The catalogue has outgrown the admin
Past about 15,000 products, wp_postmeta stops coping. Product search times out, bulk edits fail, and the admin becomes unusable before the storefront does.
Subscriptions fail at renewal
Expired cards with no dunning sequence, or a renewal cron that never ran because nothing triggers wp-cron on a low-traffic store.
Every plugin update is frightening
Forty active plugins, two of them abandoned, none of it on staging. This is an audit and a deletion list before it is a coding job.
Migrating from Shopify or Magento
The store is the easy part. Redirects, historical orders, subscription tokens and SEO equity are where migrations go wrong.
A two-day store audit answers all six
Fixed fee, written report: checkout timing against a real device, plugin risk list, order-to-gateway reconciliation, and a ranked list of what to fix first with hours against each item. Yours to take to any developer.
Engagement models
Four ways to buy WooCommerce time
Pick by how much certainty you need. Every model is the same engineers, the same review standards and the same published rate.

WooCommerce or Shopify: the honest version
If your store is standard retail, physical products, standard shipping, no unusual pricing logic, and you have nobody technical in-house, Shopify will probably serve you better than WooCommerce, and we will tell you that on the first call. You are buying a platform team for $39 a month. That is a good deal and we cannot compete with it.
Woo earns its keep when the rules are yours. Made-to-order products, quantity breaks by customer group, subscriptions tangled up with content access, an ERP that must be the source of truth for stock, a checkout that has to do something no platform anticipated. On Shopify each of those is an app subscription, a workaround, or a flat no. On Woo it is code you own, which is only an advantage if someone competent is maintaining it.
The failure mode of Woo is not the software, it is plugin accumulation. Every requirement gets solved by installing something, until forty plugins are loading on every request, two are abandoned, and nobody can update anything. That is the state most stores reach us in, and the fix starts with deleting rather than building, usually four to eight plugins replaced by a few hundred lines of code we can actually maintain.
Most stores reach us at one of three moments: mobile checkout has slowed to the point of visibly losing sales, the accountant has found a gap between the gateway and the order table, or peak season is close and nobody has load-tested anything. All three are cheaper to fix in September than in November, which is the one piece of scheduling advice in this whole page.
We have moved two clients off Woo and onto Shopify this year. Neither was a good fit for custom code, both are happier, and both referred us to someone who was. We would rather be the agency that says that than the one that bills a replatform.
The alternatives
What you are actually choosing between
Marketplace and in-house figures are typical US mid-to-senior WooCommerce ranges for 2026, including employer costs. Ours are the published rates.
Capabilities
What our WooCommerce developers actually do
Eight things store owners ask us for most. If your problem is not on this list, describe it in one paragraph and we will tell you honestly whether it is us.
Checkout optimisation and conversion work
Cart fragments removed, shipping rates cached, third-party scripts deferred and the payment step measured on a real mid-range Android, not a desktop Lighthouse run. Every change tested against conversion, not just a score.
Subscriptions and recurring billing
Dunning ladders, retry logic and real cron, so renewals stop failing quietly on expired cards.
HPOS and large-catalogue performance
High-Performance Order Storage, lookup tables and indexing for stores the admin can no longer handle.
Payments, tax and reconciliation
Webhook idempotency and replay logs, so what the gateway took and what the store recorded always agree.
Custom product configurators
Made-to-order, variable pricing and bundles: the logic core Woo will not do without twelve plugins.
Platform migrations to and from Woo
Shopify, Magento or BigCommerce moves with the redirect map built URL by URL, historical orders imported, and subscription tokens transferred without asking customers to re-enter cards. Cutover rehearsed on a clone first.
Store maintenance and peak readiness
Updates on staging first, load-tested before Black Friday, monitoring that pages a human at 3am.
Store audits
Checkout timing, plugin risk, reconciliation check and a ranked fix list with hours against each item.
Should you even stay on Woo?
Sometimes the honest answer is Shopify. If your store is standard retail and you have no development team, we will say so, and we will not charge you to hear it.
Tech stack
Current versions, not a wish list
What is in production for our clients this quarter. We will work in older versions too, most rescue jobs start there.

The engineers
The people who would be on your standup
3 of the team work on stores full time: the difference between a WordPress developer and someone who has debugged a failed renewal at midnight. You interview them before anything is agreed.
Large catalogues and the checkout path. HPOS, index strategy and the plugin cull that usually matters more than either.
Runs our migrations and subscription work. Has rebuilt checkout for the two largest stores we maintain.
Webhook and reconciliation specialist, Stripe, PayPal and three tax providers, all idempotent.
Builds product and checkout templates, and the Playwright suites that stop them regressing.

How we work
What a WooCommerce engagement includes by default
Stores have specific failure modes. These are the defaults that address them, on every project, before anyone discusses a rebuild.
Verified against the legacy tables through a full month boundary before the old write path is switched off.
The behaviour that matters only appears at real volume. A plugin adding 40ms to every page is costing you conversions.
Without it every request re-runs option and meta queries that have not changed in a week.
The default call is uncached, hits PHP, and fires on pages that have no cart on them at all.
Every index slows writes, and importing a large catalogue is a great many writes.
With the old URL list re-crawled against the new site and every row asserted before DNS moves.
You do not have to take any of this on trust. The first ten working days are risk-free, every rate is published in full, and the work happens in your repository from the first commit.
How it works
From first email to a developer on your standup
Twelve working days end to end, and no money changes hands until you have seen the work.
- Day 0
Send us the problem
A repo link, a Jira export or three plain sentences. An engineer replies, not a salesperson, inside one business day.
- Day 1
Shortlist, with rates
Two or three profiles with real GitHub history, each carrying a rate, a seniority and the date they come free.
- Day 2
Interview them yourself
Twenty minutes with the person who will write the code. Say no as often as you like. There is no fee either way.
- Days 3-12
Ten days, risk-free
Real tickets in your tracker, standup at 9:00am ET, commits in your repo. Walk away at the end and owe nothing.
- Ongoing
Scale, hold or stop
Add a second developer at the same published rate, or give 30 days' notice. Repo, cloud accounts and IP stay yours.
Why India
Why build WooCommerce with a team in India
A senior WooCommerce engineer in Pune costs roughly what a junior contractor costs in Austin. There is a second, less obvious advantage for stores: our working day covers your night. Deploys, migrations and cutovers happen while your customers are asleep, and someone is awake to watch the error log, which for a store is worth more than the rate difference.
YOUR WORKING DAY, AND OURS
- IP assignment on day one
- Everything written for you is yours on commit, not on final payment. Assignment clause, not a licence.

- Month to month after the trial. No annual minimum, no exit fee, documented handover included.
- Invoiced in USD or GBP, net 15
- Wire, ACH or card. One invoice a month, itemised by engineer and hours.
FAQ
Questions buyers ask before the first call
If yours is not here, email it. We publish the answer rather than saving it for a sales call.
How much does WooCommerce development cost?
Every seniority band and engagement model is published in full on our rates page, and the two-day store audit is a fixed fee quoted before you commit. No gate, and no call required to see either.
How much does a full WooCommerce store cost to build?
Store builds are quoted as fixed scope after a two-day audit, and the bands are published on our rates page. Below the entry band, a good theme configured properly is a better use of your money, and we will say so rather than take the work.
Can you fix a slow checkout?
That is our most common first job. Cart fragments, uncached shipping calls and third-party scripts account for most of it, and we measure on a real mid-range Android before and after rather than quoting a Lighthouse score.
Woo or Shopify?
If you are standard retail with no technical team, Shopify. If your pricing, subscription or fulfilment rules are unusual enough that a platform keeps saying no, Woo. We have moved clients each way and neither answer is a loyalty test.
Do you work with Woo Subscriptions?
Yes, including the parts that usually fail: dunning sequences, retry ladders, card-update flows, and replacing wp-cron with a real system cron so renewals actually run on a quiet store.
How large a catalogue can WooCommerce handle?
We keep stores past 40,000 products in production, but past roughly 15,000 you need HPOS, lookup tables and considered indexing. Anyone who says Woo scales without qualification has not run one that size.
Can you migrate us from Shopify or Magento?
Yes, with the redirect map built URL by URL, historical orders imported, and subscription tokens transferred so customers never re-enter a card. The cutover is rehearsed on a clone before DNS moves.
Who owns the code and the IP?
You do, assigned from the first commit rather than on final payment. Work happens in your repository and your hosting account, so there is nothing to hand over at the end.
Will you be available during Black Friday?
Yes, and we load-test in September for it. Retainer clients get an agreed escalation path and someone reachable out of hours through peak week.
What if the developer is not the right fit?
That is what the ten working days are for. Stop at the end of the trial and you owe nothing. After that we replace the engineer within five business days at no cost, with a paid week of overlap for handover.
