Engagement models

Four ways to hire a WordPress developer

Pick by how much certainty you need. Every model is the same engineers, the same review standards and the same published rate.

Straight answer

When a dedicated WordPress developer is the right call, and when it is not

Staff augmentation suits a particular shape of problem: you know roughly what needs building, you have someone who can answer questions, and the work will not run out in a month. A dedicated WordPress developer learns your content model, your plugin stack and your deploy process over the first fortnight, and by week three is shipping templates and fixes without asking which environment is live. That compounding familiarity is the whole point, and it is why we price monthly rather than by the sprint.

It is the wrong call for a brochure site. If you need five pages and a contact form, a good theme and a competent freelancer will beat us on price, and we will tell you that rather than take the work. We are worth hiring when WordPress is doing real work: a store, a membership, a publishing workflow, an integration with the systems that actually run your business.

Be wary, too, of hiring a developer for what is really a plugin problem. Forty active plugins, two page builders and a theme that was customised through the admin is not a coding job. It is an audit and a decision about what goes. Writing more code on top of that is how sites end up unmaintainable, and it is the most common state we inherit.

Most of our WordPress clients arrive at one of three moments: the site has slowed to the point of losing sales, an update has broken something nobody can trace, or a build is being handed over by an agency that has stopped answering email. All three reward an engineer who has seen it before rather than a cheaper one who is about to learn.

If a two-day audit is the honest answer to your question, we will tell you that instead of quoting a retainer. It has cost us work and earned us more.

Capabilities

What our WordPress developers actually do

Eight things WordPress teams ask us for most. If your problem is not on this list, describe it in one paragraph and we will tell you honestly whether it is us.

01 4-10 weeks

Custom block theme development

Native Gutenberg blocks and ACF field groups, version-controlled and deployed from Git, so your editors get a real layout system instead of a page-builder licence.

Core Web Vitals and performance

Object caching, query cleanup, image pipeline and a CDN, with LCP measured before and after.

How we work

What a WordPress engagement includes by default

What is included

What we do on every WordPress project without being asked, and what we will not do regardless of the brief.

Content model
Decided before any visual work

Post types, taxonomies and fields first. It is the most skipped step in WordPress projects and it decides whether editors use the site or fight it.

Editing
Patterns and locked templates

Editors compose from pre-built sections rather than raw columns, so the site does not drift away from its own design over two years.

Plugins
Counted, and justified per request

Each one measured for what it costs on every page load. An abandoned plugin is a security problem with a countdown attached.

Performance
Object cache and a real image pipeline

Generated on upload, modern formats, correct sizes, served from a CDN. Not a plugin bolted on at the end.

Updates
Staging first, always

Core and plugin updates rehearsed before production. Deploys come from your main branch, never from a laptop.

Ownership
Your repository and hosting, from day one

Including the theme, the custom plugins, and the documentation needed to run them without us.

You do not have to take any of this on trust. The first ten working days are risk-free, every rate is published in full, and the work happens in your repository from the first commit.

How it works

From first email to a developer on your standup

Twelve working days end to end, and no money changes hands until you have seen the work.

  1. Day 0

    Send us the problem

A repo link, a Jira export or three plain sentences. An engineer replies, not a salesperson, inside one business day.

  2. Day 1

    Shortlist, with rates

Two or three profiles with real GitHub history, each carrying a rate, a seniority and the date they come free.

  3. Day 2

    Interview them yourself

Twenty minutes with the person who will write the code. Say no as often as you like. There is no fee either way.

  4. Days 3-12

    Ten days, risk-free

Real tickets in your tracker, standup at 9:00am ET, commits in your repo. Walk away at the end and owe nothing.

  5. Ongoing

    Scale, hold or stop

Add a second developer at the same published rate, or give 30 days' notice. Repo, cloud accounts and IP stay yours.

Why India

Why hire WordPress developers in India

A senior WordPress engineer in Pune costs roughly what a junior contractor costs in Austin. WordPress also runs an enormous share of Indian agency work, which means the experience here is concentrated in exactly the unglamorous areas that decide whether a site survives, plugin conflicts, migrations, multisite, and stores that have outgrown their theme.

Inherited sites

What we do in the first two weeks on a site somebody else built

Most WordPress work we take on arrives with no documentation and a plugin list nobody can justify. This is the order we work through it.

DAYS 1-2

Inventory before opinions

Every plugin listed with its last release date, known vulnerabilities, and what it actually does on the site. In practice a third of them turn out to be doing nothing anyone can name. We do not delete anything yet, we just write down what is there and what it costs you.

DAYS 3-4

Get it into Git and onto staging

If deploys currently happen over FTP or through the admin, that is the first thing to change, because nothing else is safe until it is reversible. Theme and custom plugins into version control, a staging site that matches production, and automated deploys from your main branch.

DAYS 5-7

Measure before changing anything

Real field data from Search Console and a lab run with Query Monitor open. It is common to find one plugin responsible for most of the server response time, and equally common that the thing everybody blamed is fine. Numbers first, then a plan you can argue with.

DAYS 8-10

The cheap wins, in order

Object caching, an image pipeline that serves modern formats at sensible sizes, and the two or three plugin removals the inventory made obvious. These usually cost less than a week and account for most of the improvement anyone will notice.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask before the first call

If yours is not here, email it. We publish the answer rather than saving it for a sales call.

How much does it cost to hire WordPress developers in India?

Every seniority band and engagement model is published in full on our rates page, hourly, part-time, dedicated and pod, in USD, with no gate and no call required. We charge the same published rate to every client in every market.

How quickly can a WordPress developer start?

Usually within five business days, and same-week for hourly work. 2 WordPress engineers are free within four weeks and each profile above carries the date they come available.

Do you build with Gutenberg or a page builder?

Native blocks with ACF, deployed from Git. We will maintain an Elementor or WPBakery site you already own, but we will not start a new one: the licence, the lock-in and the performance cost all land on you, not us.

Can you work with our existing theme?

Yes, through a child theme under version control with a staging environment. If the theme was customised through the admin rather than in code, we start with a two-day audit so nobody is guessing what a deploy will overwrite.

Who owns the code and the IP?

You do, assigned from the first commit rather than on final payment. Work happens in your GitHub organisation and your hosting account, so there is nothing to hand over at the end.

What if the developer is not the right fit?

That is what the ten working days are for. Stop at the end of the trial and you owe nothing. After that we replace the engineer within five business days at no cost, with a paid week of overlap for handover.

How much timezone overlap do we get?

Four hours with New York, five and a half with London, and two with San Francisco. Standup is at 9:00am your time, and a written handover is in your inbox before your morning.

Do you handle maintenance and updates?

On retainer, yes: core and plugin updates applied to staging first, weekly off-site backups, uptime and error monitoring, and a monthly report of what changed and what it broke.

Can you take over a site another agency built?

Most of our work starts that way. We begin with a paid two-day audit, plugin risk, performance, security, and what to fix first, and you are free to take that report elsewhere.

Do you do WordPress SEO?

The technical half, yes: Core Web Vitals, crawlability, schema, redirects and site structure. Content strategy and link building we do not sell, and we will happily tell you who does rather than pretend otherwise.
